Jesus

He is the image of the invisible God

(for God lives in unapproachable light,
whom no man has seen or can see)

the firstborn of all creation

(whom God appointed heir of all things)

For by Him all things were created,

(for all things came into being through Him,
and apart from Him nothing came into being
that has come into being)

both in the heavens and on earth,
visible or invisible,

(the world was made through Him,
and the world did not know Him)

whether thrones or dominions
or rulers or authorities -

(for there is no authority except from God,
and those which exist are established by God)

all things have been created
through Him and for Him.

(the heavens are telling of the glory of God
and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands)

He is before all things

(the Alpha and Omega, the first and the last,
the beginning and the end)

and in Him all things hold together

(He gives His sheep eternal life and they will never perish;
and no one will snatch them out of His hand)

He is also the head of the body,
the church;

(Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her,
so that He might sanctify her,
having cleansed her by the washing of water with the Word,
that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory,
having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing,
that she would be holy and blameless)

He is the beginning

(before Abraham was born, I AM)

the firstborn from the dead,

(and the first fruits of those who are asleep - for since by a man came death,
by a man also came the resurrection from the dead)

so that He Himself will come
to have first place in everything.

(one day every knee will bow,
of those who are in heaven and on the earth,
and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.)

  1. Excellent! Are you studying or memorizing Colossians lately? I spent a lot of time there last year and I'm loving your commentary.

  2. Yes, I am working on Colossians - it's a lot harder than Psalm 139! I love several of the passages in Colossians, so I thought I'd just start at the beginning. But the intro section is really tough...Paul is the king of run-on sentences! Still enjoying it, however...

  3. I never spent much time thinking about Colossians 'til I was working on memorizing it (the goal was to memorize the whole book, but I found that doing that, the Sunday school verses with the kids, our passage for school, and the passage for Bible study was a bit too much, so part way in to chapter 2 I put it aside.) There is soooo much in there that I never really spent time thinking about, but when you say it repeatedly during the course of a day for several months, you pull a lot out of it! I do agree with you about the run-on sentences though. Paul is the master of those! And Psalm 139 is a LOT easier!
